today wasn't quite as productive as I was hoping. But not for lack of trying. I honestly worked for a good part of the day while I was home. I was working on a new design though and it ended up being a lot harder to figure out that I thought it would be.
When I make a new design, first I do a rough sketch, work out how I want it to look. Then I do a technical drawing with dimensions and then I draw out each piece and how many are needed (because making patterns are for suckers and/or non-lazy people).
Regardless of how good the plan is, I never really know what to expect when I start sewing. Especially if the design includes inserts and gussets and zippers and such. so I got halfway through and then got super confused! But it all makes sense now. By time I left to go to my parents' house for dinner I knew what I needed to do. So the next one should put together much better. Hopefully I can get a couple more done tomorrow.
Roni and I are going to see Coraline in the afternoon tomorrow. We won't be seeing it in 3D, because this stupid town doesn't have a 3D theatre. But I think it'll still be good in 2D. So other than that, and getting groceries, I'll just be at home all day working. I'm hoping to be productive.
However, all of that is just secondary. The real important news is that I booked my flight and hotel to Paris tonight!!!! I think I got a pretty good deal, especially compared to what the travel agent wanted to charge me. I saved about $1400!
The hotel looks fantastic. It's the Grand Hotel Des Gobelins. At first I was like "whats this goblin hotel?" then I clicked on it and fell in love with it. The name has nothing to do with goblins, either. It's named for the textiles family, the Gobelins. textiles! it was meant for me to stay there.
It's all done in classic art nouveau style with scrolling ironwork banisters on the stairs, gorgeous rounded dining chairs in the breakfast room, etc. Here, look:

The awning was designed to look like the metro stations. I love that!

I was really really hoping I'd get to stay in on of those weirdly angled, converted 19th century apartments!

Front reception. Look at the staircase! The warm lighting and colours!
The room itself is nothing special. Small, single, but with a private bath, lock-box, phone and TV. Really, I'm only going to be sleeping and showering there, so who cares, right?
When I come back, I have to transfer in Germany. I'm hoping it won't be too big of a deal - I'll only be there a couple hours. So hopefully there won't be any major language barrier that screws everything up!
Only 113 days to go! Hahaha...
I always knew I was going in June, but booking this flight just made it more official, you know?
I'm so stupidly excited now. I actually did a little dance when the page on Expedia.ca came up telling me I successfully booked my trip.
Expect numerous more posts along the lines of "omgi'mgoingtoparisthisissoawesomeican'twait!!!" over the next few months.
but for now, i'm going to bed.
goodnight xo!
